i did not install the OS, and am lost in os10 as nothing works like 98/XP where i've formatted drives dozens of times) remain when i unplug the hard drive. the hard drive is 40gb, and those two "drives" (C: drive partitions i suspect.
When in disc management, even with "show hidden" selected, two un-named drives show up, one as a 39mb partition and the other as an 11.73GB active recovery partition both 100% free with no file systems. i can hear the drive spinning, so i know it's powered up, and i have the jumper set to slave, but nothing i try using online tutorials will get the drive to show up. I cannot get my system to recognize a western digital 40GB IDE drive i'm running through a USB converter to test the adapter before hooking up a 120GB WD drive i have that has files on it after reading horror stories about some people's drives getting fried by some adapters.

If you still can not access the drive and its contents, at this stage you will need to seek further professional help.I have a dell XPS 8700 computer (intel core i7-4790 CPU 3.6 GHz, 12 GB memory, 64 bit with a 1TB hard drive) If not detected by Windows, double check jumper settings and then Drive Mgmt Console. If so, save and reboot to Windows (or other). Make sure BIOS detects the drive and registers its size correctly. Once installed, power up the PC, ready to intercept the loading of the OS by hitting the proper key to enter the BIOS setup utility. Make sure the jumpers are properly configured for installation into the specific PC you are connecting it to.
If not, refer to next item.Ĥ.) If Disk Management Console detected the drive but was unable to initialize it, remove the drive from the adapter. If one is found, attempt to initialize it. On some systems, the detection (and ensuing driver installation) of the USB adapter can take an unusually long time.Ģ.) Especially in scenarios where drives are swapped around in varying scenarios, connect the USB adapters plug to a different port. Here are a few issues/resolutions I have encountered with them regarding the systems failure to detect the drive.ġ.) Wait. had a good read of previous suggestions around similar problems or topicsĪs an alternative - if I cant make this work I would be interested in recommendations of UK based harddrive recovery firms that I could post this to and get the data by mailed back to me on a USB stick. trying to connect to an iMac using MacOS to see if that was more successful changing the jumper settings from Master to Cable Select all connected at reboot, connect the adaptor only at reboot then the drive afterwards, etc
rebooting and reconnecting the components in different orders, i.e. The connector seems to connect to the IDE fine. The drive spins & powers up, but the USB device doesnt seem to be recognised. So I can see nothing in Disk Management in the Computer Management application and the drive doesnt seem to be recognised. However, when I came to repeat this with the older Fujitsu MPF3014AT 20Gb drive the drive isn't recognised.

The drivers were identified installed and it worked simply as I had expected based on the Youtube videos etc I had read. I am using a laptop running Windows 7 (Home edition).
